The Austria’s updated National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change outlines the strategic framework for reducing climate vulnerability and enhancing resilience across environmental, social and economic systems in line with international and EU obligations, including the Paris Agreement, the EU Adaptation Strategy and the European Climate Law. Building on previous strategies (2012, 2017), it provides a contextual overview and complements an action plan covering 14 priority sectors—such as agriculture, forestry, water management, energy, health, biodiversity and spatial planning—and over 100 recommended measures. The strategy emphasises the integration of adaptation into sectoral policies, the use of nature-based solutions, the prevention of maladaptation through defined criteria, and strengthened multi-level governance involving federal, regional and local authorities. It also highlights capacity building, targeted research programmes, regional implementation tools, and a structured monitoring and reporting framework with five‑year progress cycles. Implementation is supported through defined institutional responsibilities, indicators and financing principles within existing public budgets using Green Budgeting approaches, while cross-cutting themes include social inclusion, stakeholder engagement, communication, and the identification of future priorities such as updated climate scenarios, national assessments and enhanced research and coordination mechanisms.
