The Environment Information Australia Act 2025 establishes the office of the Head of Environment Information Australia (EIA) to improve the availability, accessibility and quality of national environmental information and to strengthen accountability through transparent environmental reporting. The Head is responsible for providing high-quality environmental information to the Minister, the National Environmental Protection Agency and the public, while operating independently in relation to key reporting and statistical functions. The Act requires the preparation and publication of biennial State of the Environment reports and the establishment and maintenance of environmental economic accounts consistent with internationally recognised statistical principles. The legislation creates a framework for environmental assessment, monitoring and reporting. State of the Environment reports must analyse environmental conditions, trends and progress towards national environmental goals, and must incorporate scientific expertise as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge concerning land management, biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. The Head may also declare critical datasets and systems as national environmental information assets and maintain a public register of those assets. In turn, the Minister is required to respond to State of the Environment reports by setting environmental targets and timeframes, and to table statements of environmental economic accounts in Parliament.
