The Wood Energy Strategy, published by New Zealand's Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment in 2025, provides a framework for expanding the sustainable production and use of wood-derived energy as part of the country's energy transition and economic development objectives. The Strategy promotes the use of wood fibre feedstocks, including processing residues, forest residues, low-grade logs and potential short-rotation forestry, to enhance energy security, diversify energy supplies and support regional growth. It establishes six objectives focused on increasing wood fibre availability, facilitating investment in production capacity, reducing barriers to adoption, improving market access and transparency, strengthening market coordination, and promoting sustainably sourced wood energy. The Strategy is supported by an Action Plan containing measures to address supply chain, market and regulatory barriers, encourage innovation and business development, improve information on sustainability and emissions impacts, and support the development of domestic and export markets. It also recognises opportunities for regional communities and Māori participation and promotes collaboration among government agencies, industry stakeholders and research institutions.
