Kenya Meat Commission Act (Cap. 363).

This Act makes provision for the establishment of the Kenya Meat Commission, defines its functions, powers, exclusive rights and privileges and internal organization and provides rules relative to the acquisition of scheduled undertakings by the Commission. The Commission is established as a body corporate and shall be managed by a managing commissioner to be appointed by the Commission with the approval of the Minister. The Commission shall have the exclusive right to establish and operate slaughterhouses and meat storage works and shall have other exclusive rights regarding the processing and marketing of meat as defined. The Commission has extensive powers to operate in the field of the raising of cattle and the processing of products derived from cattle. The Commission shall have, in principle, the sole and exclusive right to purchase slaughter stock and to retain, sell any slaughter stock purchased, and to sell any products derived from any such slaughter stock. As a consequence of the powers of the Commission, restrictions are placed on the dealings in fresh meat by persons residing outside the reserved areas, i.e. Trust lands and some other specified lands. The Commission may be required to acquire one or more undertakings listed in the Schedule to this Act. Another Schedule specifies grades of meat.
