Federal Sustainable Development Strategy for Canada 2016–2019.

This Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) 2016–2019 is a cross-sectoral policy document. It sets out 13 aspirational, long-term goals that are a Canadian reflection of the global SDGs, with a focus on their environmental dimensions, including: Coasts and oceans support healthy, resilient and productive ecosystems; All wildlife species have healthy and viable populations; Lands and forests support biodiversity and provide a variety of ecosystem services for generations to come; All Canadians have access to safe drinking water and, in particular, the significant challenges Indigenous communities face are addressed; Innovation and ingenuity contribute to a worldleading agricultural sector and food economy for the benefit of all Canadians; A low-carbon economy contributes to limiting global average temperature rise to well below two degrees Celsius and supports efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius; etc. The FSDS seeks to ensure that all Canadians—including those in isolated northern communities—have access to nutritious food. One of the short term milestone is: in 2016, expand the number of eligible isolated northern communities that have access to healthy foods at a subsidized rate as part of the Nutrition North Canada. In order to make agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable, ŠŠthe medium-term tagets are set out, including: ŠŠ By 2030, agricultural working landscapes provide a stable or improved level of biodiversity and efficient management towards water and soil quality for food production; ŠŠ By 2020, all aquaculture in Canada is managed under a science-based regime that promotes the sustainable use of aquatic resources (marine and freshwater) in ways that conserve biodiversity;ŠŠ By 2020, at least 17% of terrestrial areas and inland water are conserved through networks of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures; ŠŠ By 2019, the condition of 90% of ecological integrity indicators in national parks is maintained or improved; ŠŠ Between now and 2020, maintain Canada’s annual timber harvest at or below sustainable wood supply levels; etc. The FSDS further contribute to more inclusive and efficient agricultural and food systems, in articluar, one of the medium-term tagets is: Ensure safe and accessible food supply by mitigating risks to animal and plant resources from pests, diseases and other health hazards and prevent risks to health of Canadians. In addition, the FSDS promotes effective action on climate change. The medium term target is: By 2030, reduce Canada's total GHG emissions by 30%, relative to 2005 emission levels. The short term milestones include: ŠŠ By the end of Fall 2016, First Ministers are expected to agree on Canada's approach to climate change via a pan-Canadian framework on clean growth and climate change, which will put Canada on the path to meeting its 2030 target and taking action on adaptation and clean technology ŠŠ Ratify the Paris Agreement by the end of 2016 ŠŠ Along with the US and Mexico, Canada has committed to develop a mid-century, long-term low-greenhouse gas emissions development strategy by the end of 2016.
