This document lays down the 25 Year Environment Plan, a planning instrument with a multi-sectoral approach which aims to achieve the following: a) Clean air; b) Clean and plentiful water; c) Thriving plants and wildlife; d) A reduced risk of harm from environmental hazards such as flooding and drought; e) Using resources from nature more sustainably and efficiently; f) Enhanced beauty, heritage and engagement with the natural environment; g) Mitigating and adapting to climate change; h) Minimizing waste; i) Managing exposure to chemicals; j) Enhancing biosecurity. To achieve these objectives, the Plan defines actions to be undertaken in the following six key areas: 1) Using and managing land sustainably; 2) Recovering nature and enhancing the beauty of landscapes; 3) Connecting people with the environment to improve health and wellbeing; 4) Increasing resource efficiency and reducing pollution and waste; 5) Securing clean, productive and biologically diverse seas and oceans; 6) Protecting and improving the global environment. The Plan seeks to make agriculture more productive and sustainable. Chapter 1 on using and managing land sustainably provides for new farming rules for water, working with farmers to use fertilizers efficiently, protecting crops while reducing the environmental impact of pesticides. In the field of fisheries, the objective is to set out a sustainable fisheries policy (since the United Kingdom will leave the EU Common Fisheries Policy). Regarding use of water resources, the Plan aims to reform the approach to water abstraction and to increase water supply and promote greater water efficiency and less personal use. In addition the Plan seeks to increase the resilience of livelihoods to disasters. In the field of sustainable use of land, special attention is given to reducing risks from flooding and coastal erosion, which includes: expanding the use of natural flood management solutions; putting in place more sustainable drainage systems; making at-risk properties more resilient to flooding.
