This National Hazardous Waste Management Plan is a nationwide sectoral document that reviews the 2008 - 2012 Plan and aims at improving the management of hazardous waste by implementing the following 4 main objectives (i) prevent and reduce the generation of hazardous waste by industry and society generally; (ii) maximise the collection of hazardous waste with a view to reducing the environmental and health impacts of any unregulated waste; (iii) strive for increased self-sufficiency in the management of hazardous waste and to minimise hazardous waste export; and (iv) minimise the environmental, health, social and economic impacts of hazardous waste generation and management. The Plan makes 27 recommendations dealing with (1) prevention of hazardous waste; (2) collection of hazardous waste and the enforcement of hazardous waste regulations; (3) moving towards self-sufficiency in hazardous waste management; (4) regulatory aspects; (5) legacy issues; (6) north-south cooperation; (7) guidance and awareness; and (8) plan implementation. Each of the 27 recommendations has a responsible body or bodies identified. The principal implementing bodies are the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the local authorities.
