Ecological Education and Development Strategy, is a nationwide policy document, approved by the Government, has as its purpose formation of a new ecological mindset based on the principles of joint development of nature and society, which is impossible without universal ecological education and upbringing. Ecological education is a continuous, multifaceted, mandatory process of individual education, upbringing and development, aimed at theoretical-practical knowledge about the environment; the acquisition of skills and abilities, as well as the orientation of the value system, behavior and the formation of ecological culture. Ecological culture is the experience inherited from human life with the environment, which contributes to a healthy lifestyle, sustainable socio-economic development of the country, improving the quality of life and environmental security. The formation of the ecological culture of the society is one of the priorities of the state. The need for Ecological Education and Development Strategy and urgency for adoption thereof is due to the unfavorable ecological situation in the country, in which there is a significant mismatch between economic growth and the quality of the environment, one of the reasons being extremely low level of public environmental awareness and environmental behavior. The goal of the Strategy is improving the ecological education, upbringing and awareness system in the Republic of Armenia, expanding harmonious and mutually beneficial cooperation between the state, society and international organizations in this field, aimed at improving the quality of ecological education, raising public awareness, developing environmental awareness and responsible attitude towards the environment, with a view of improving the quality of life and the right to live in a healthy environment. Ecological education shall be performed by the Ministry of Education and Science and its structural subdivisions at the national level and by territorial governments and local self-government at the territorial and local levels.
