The NIP concerns: description of the 2001 Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) obligations and the chemicals to be regulated; an overview of the POPs impact on the implementation process and on the political, economical and social context of the country, with a focus on the adverse effects on the fish health of chemical contamination of air and water, and of industrial, agricultural waste runoff; past and current programmes for monitoring releases and environmental and health impacts, showing levels of pesticide POPs found in breast milk, fish products, water and air; existing programmes to raise awareness and educate the public about the threat of POPs; overview of technical and infrastructural facilities for future POPs management, and mobilising financial resources. Concerning specific strategies and actions, the NIP focuses on: current analysis of the pesticide POPs in the country, and targeted measures to promote and develop alternatives; control of illegal POPs entering Kenya; status of industrial POPs released from refrigerators and electronic devices; importation of products containing industrial POPs and related issues concerning plastic, electric and electronic waste; unintentionally produced POPs, including: furans and dioxins, from medical waste incineration; improving systematic analysis of POPs residues in water and air; assessment and continuous updating of the lists of chemicals; creation of specific programmes to raise awareness about POPs management and increase capacity building of the general public, with coordinated actions at national, regional and county levels, working with government institutions, non-governmental organisations and the international agencies to implement appropriate interventions; coordination mechanism for implementing the NIP over a 5 year period from 2014 to 2019.
