This comprehensive Conservation Strategy for the African Lion (Panthera leo) is a 5-year nationwide sectoral document with the primary goal of ensuring the preservation and potential restoration of viable lion populations in Mozambique. It acknowledges the considerable social, cultural, ecological, and economic advantages these lions can offer to the people while working to mitigate conflicts. The overarching aim is to realize a sustainable managed environment that yields mutual benefits for both current and forthcoming generations of both the populace and the lion population within the country. To achieve the goal, the Strategy sets out the following six objectives (1) Management, to ensure effective conservation management of lions, their habitats and wild prey; (2) Mitigation, to minimize, where possible, human-lion-related conflicts; (3) Socio‐economics, to increase the benefits and minimize the costs of long‐term lion management amongst all the stakeholders; (4) Policy and Land Use; to develop and implement harmonious, comprehensive legal and institutional frameworks that provide for the expansion of wildlife‐integrated land use, lion conservation and associated socio‐economic benefits in current and potential lion range; (5) Politics, to ensure that global policies better reflect the will and intent of regional and National sustainable use policies and practices; (6) Trade, to prevent illegal trade in lions and lion products while promoting and safeguarding sustainable legal trade, in line with CITES requirements. Together with the objectives, the document identifies in the Action Plan a series of interventions, targets, and activities to achieve the goal, and outlines the roles and responsibilities of different actors.
