This National Action Programme provides a guiding framework for implementing the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Kenya. The Programme defines the following measures and activities and measures to combat desertification at all levels of action: involvement of local communities in the sustainable management of the natural resources; drafting of effective land use Plans, zoning Plans, and resources tenure Policies; ensuring capacity building for all stakeholders and institutions. The Programme specifies sectoral priority areas where investments could ensure sustainable development and management of natural resources, rehabilitate degraded areas and reclaim wastelands: promotion of renewable energy; vegetation cover and wildlife protection; forest conservation; agriculture, crops production, erosion and pastoralism; soil management; conservation of biodiversity; water resources management. The Programme also includes actions and measures to support investments in cross-sectoral programmes, including: mainstreaming gender into all desertification projects; poverty and environment; early warning system.
