The Future Gas Strategy is an evidence-based framework for gas production and consumption in Australia, providing the principles to guide policymaking to facilitate the transition to net zero. It outlines a pathway for Australia to manage its evolving role as a trusted gas producer and responsible climate actor, emphasizing transparency, integrity, and a strong evidence base. Developed in 2024 on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands, the strategy aims to support the decarbonisation of the Australian economy, ensure energy security and affordability, enhance Australia's reputation as a trade and investment destination, and assist trade partners on their paths to net zero. The strategy is grounded in six key principles: (i) supporting global emissions reductions to reduce the impacts of climate change and will reach net zero emissions by 2050; (ii) gas must remain affordable for Australian users throughout the transition to net zero; (iii) new sources of gas supply are needed to meet demand during the economy-wide transition; (iv) reliable gas supply will gradually and inevitably support a shift towards higher-value and non-substitutable gas uses. Households will continue to have a choice over how their energy needs are met; (v) gas and electricity markets must adapt to remain fit for purpose throughout the energy transformation; (vi) Australia is, and will remain, a reliable trading partner for energy, including Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and low emission gases.
