Strategic Action Plan on Gender Equality 2014-2017.

The Strategic Action Plan on Gender Equality 2014–2017 aims to promote equality between men and women across all sectors of Cypriot society. Developed by the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, the plan builds on previous national efforts and responds to evaluations and recommendations from both domestic stakeholders and international bodies like the CEDAW Committee. It recognizes the disproportionate impact of economic crises on women and seeks to address systemic inequalities through targeted, realistic actions within the state’s financial and administrative capacities. Six priority objectives guide the plan: (1) effective promotion of gender equality through administrative reform, (2) modernization of the legislative framework, (3) balanced participation in decision-making positions, (4) elimination and prevention of violence against women, (5) economic empowerment of women and poverty eradication, and (6) elimination of social stereotypes and prejudices. Each objective is supported by interim goals, specific actions, responsible agencies, timelines, and monitoring indicators to ensure accountability and progress. The plan emphasizes interdepartmental coordination and stakeholder engagement, including NGOs, equality bodies, and local authorities. It integrates gender mainstreaming into public administration, strengthens the National Machinery for Women’s Rights, and promotes legal reforms to eliminate discrimination. Special attention is given to vulnerable groups such as migrant women, women with disabilities, and victims of violence, ensuring inclusive and equitable access to justice, employment, and social services. Education and media play a central role in transforming societal attitudes. The plan includes initiatives to integrate gender equality into school curricula, train educators and public officials, and raise awareness through campaigns. By fostering a culture of equality and dismantling patriarchal norms, the Strategic Action Plan seeks to create a more just and inclusive society where both women and men can participate fully and equally in all aspects of life.
