The Tasmania’s Climate Change Action Plan 2023–2025 – Implementation Plan, sets out the State’s approach to climate change mitigation and adaptation over a two-year period. It outlines a vision to achieve net zero emissions by 2030, enhance carbon storage, and strengthen resilience across communities, industries, and infrastructure. The Plan is guided by principles of sustainable development, transparency, science-based decision-making, integrated governance, risk management, community engagement, and alignment with national and international frameworks. Key targets include net zero emissions from 2030, halving food waste by 2030, full electrification of the government vehicle fleet by 2030, doubling renewable electricity production by 2040 (with an interim target of 150% by 2030), maintaining competitive electricity prices, becoming a significant renewable hydrogen producer, and protecting high conservation values in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The Plan is structured around three priority areas: Information and Knowledge: improving access to climate data, projections, and resources; embedding climate considerations in government decision-making; and empowering youth engagement. Transition and Innovation – supporting emissions reduction through sectoral plans, electrification, renewable energy expansion, circular economy initiatives, and low-carbon agriculture and forestry practices. Adaptation and Resilience: conducting statewide risk assessments, collaborating with local government, improving disaster preparedness, and enhancing resilience in natural environments, communities, and key economic sectors. Implementation relies on a partnership approach involving government, industry, scientific bodies, and the community. Monitoring and evaluation will be coordinated by the Climate Change Office through annual reporting and compliance with legislative requirements.
