Law No. 12.523 providing guidelines for the priority purchase of fish from fishing communities and family fish farmers for food programmes within the state of Rio Grande do Norte.

This Law establishes that, within the scope of social, food and nutrition security programmes in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, including the Food Acquisition Programme (PAA) and the National School Feeding Programme (PNAE), fish shall be purchased primarily from fishing communities and family fish farmers established in this State. Fish purchase contracts entered into under this Law shall comply with the following guidelines: fish must come from fishing communities or family fish farmers located in the State of Rio Grande do Norte; fish production must comply with environmentally responsible practices, in accordance with specific regulations; and fish must meet the quality and food safety standards required by current legislation.
