Order No. 523 on critically antimicrobial-resistant salmonella in poultry, cattle and pigs.

This Order establishes Denmark’s rules for managing and tracing cases of critically antimicrobial-resistant salmonella in poultry, cattle and pigs. It applies to salmonella strains resistant to key antibiotics, including fluoroquinolones, third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins, colistin and carbapenems, and requires farmers and slaughterhouses to carry out trace-back investigations when such strains are detected. The regulation imposes measures to identify possible sources of infection, document recent antibiotic use and animal movements, restrict the use of manure on crops intended for direct human consumption or grazing land, and notify relevant parties of detections. It also sets conditions under which infected poultry flocks, cattle holdings and pig herds may be declared free of critically resistant salmonella following testing, slaughter, cleaning and disinfection, and establishes reporting obligations, enforcement measures and penalties for non-compliance.
