This Regulation prescribes activities that may be undertaken in New Zealand’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf as permitted activities under the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012. It establishes conditions and procedures for marine scientific research, prospecting, exploration, seismic surveying, the maintenance and alteration of marine structures, the placement and removal of submarine cables, and the deposit of material from authorised space vehicle launches. The Regulation requires environmental assessments, sensitive environment contingency plans, notification and reporting obligations, and measures to avoid, remedy or mitigate adverse environmental effects. It designates the Environmental Protection Authority as the responsible monitoring and notification authority and provides for consultation with iwi, hapū and customary groups. Detailed schedules prescribe forms, information requirements and procedural timelines, while transitional provisions govern activities commenced before the entry into force of subsequent amendments.
