The Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of Trinidad and Tobago sets out the country's climate mitigation commitments for the period 2025-2035. The NDC establishes both unconditional and conditional mitigation targets. The unconditional target is to reduce emissions from public transportation by 30% below 2013 levels by 2030 and to achieve a 50% reduction in total transportation emissions by 2035, relative to 2013 levels. The conditional targets consist of: (i) increasing the share of electricity generation from renewable energy sources to 30% by 2030, resulting in an estimated reduction of 17 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent (CO₂-e) emissions and constituting an update to the country's 2030 NDC; and (ii) reducing cumulative emissions from the transportation, power generation, and industrial sectors by 15% below a business-as-usual baseline by 2035, equivalent to a reduction of 136 million tonnes CO₂-e compared with 2013 levels. The NDC focuses on mitigation measures in the power generation, transportation, and industrial sectors. Achievement of the 15% emissions reduction target by 2035 is expected to be supported, in part, through the expansion of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The Government also intends to strengthen implementation of the Integrated Resource and Resiliency Plan to address long-term resource requirements in the power generation sector. In this regard, the NDC promotes electricity generation from renewable energy sources, with particular emphasis on solar and wind energy projects. To reduce emissions from the transportation sector, the NDC provides for tax and import duty exemptions for electric vehicles. In the industrial sector, the NDC incorporates the Green Hydrogen Roadmap as a key component of the country's decarbonisation strategy and establishes a target to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030.
