Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects—Non-notified Activities) Regulations 2014.

These Regulations, made under the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act 2012, classify specified activities associated with petroleum exploration drilling in New Zealand’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf as non-notified activities for marine consent purposes. The Regulations define exploration drilling for petroleum and apply to activities such as the placement of drilling structures, removal of non-living natural material, and the generation of vibrations related to exploratory drilling, while excluding production and development wells. Marine consent applications must demonstrate the exploratory purpose of the activity and provide a full description of the proposal. Eligibility is conditional on the activity occurring within, adjacent to, or under rights granted by permits or privileges under the Crown Minerals Act 1991. Non-notified applications are processed by the Environmental Protection Agency and served on relevant iwi authorities and customary groups in accordance with the principal Act. The Regulations are administered by the Ministry for the Environment.
