The National Poultry Development Policy 2008 establishes a policy framework for the sustainable development of Bangladesh’s poultry sector, recognising its importance for animal protein supply, employment generation, poverty reduction and rural development. Its principal objectives are to increase the production of poultry, eggs and poultry products; improve the availability of safe and nutritious food; conserve and develop indigenous and improved poultry breeds; strengthen family-based and commercial poultry farming; and promote investment, entrepreneurship and income-generating opportunities, particularly for poor rural households. The policy also seeks to create a favourable environment for poultry production through support for feed production, breeding, marketing and value-chain development. The policy further aims to strengthen poultry health services, disease surveillance and control, research, training, extension services and quality assurance systems. It promotes the development of modern marketing and processing facilities, encourages environmentally sound farm management and waste disposal practices, and supports the establishment of veterinary, laboratory and institutional capacities. In addition, the policy seeks to improve regulation of poultry feed, chicks, medicines and vaccines, enhance export opportunities for poultry products, and ensure coordinated public and private sector involvement in the expansion of a safe, competitive and commercially viable poultry industry.
