Australia’s Sustainable Ocean Plan sets out Australia’s national framework for achieving the sustainable management of 100 per cent of its marine jurisdiction. The Plan recognises the ocean’s environmental, economic and social importance, including its role in supporting biodiversity, climate regulation, food security, trade, renewable energy and employment. It identifies growing pressures from climate change, marine biodiversity loss, pollution, biosecurity threats and increasing competition among ocean users, while affirming Australia’s commitment as a member of the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy to sustainably manage all ocean areas under its jurisdiction. The Plan establishes a vision of healthy and resilient coasts and oceans, wise use of ocean resources, and equitable sharing of ocean benefits. To achieve this vision, it identifies four action areas: climate action, ocean industries, protection, restoration and resilience, and First Nations participation. It also identifies collaboration, equity and inclusion, knowledge and finance as enabling pillars. Particular emphasis is placed on strengthening ocean governance, integrating Indigenous and scientific knowledge, supporting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, facilitating renewable energy development, restoring marine and coastal ecosystems, and improving resilience to climate-related impacts and extreme marine events. The Plan outlines a series of flagship actions led by the Australian Government, including the creation of a National Ocean Steering Committee and National Ocean Advisory Group, support for emissions reduction in shipping, development of restoration frameworks, improvement of ocean science and data systems, facilitation of First Nations-led ocean initiatives, and mobilisation of public and private finance for sustainable ocean management. It also commits to protecting at least 30 per cent of Australia’s ocean in highly protected marine areas by 2030, strengthening cooperation under international marine biodiversity agreements, and advancing coordinated implementation through monitoring, reporting and cross-jurisdictional collaboration.
