National Crop and Forest Biotechnology Policy Guidelines, 2012.

The National Crop and Forest Biotechnology Policy Guidelines 2012 aims to promote the safe and effective development and application of biotechnology in the crop and forestry sectors in order to enhance productivity, sustainability and national food security. The guidelines seek to facilitate research, innovation and technology transfer in areas such as genetic improvement, tissue culture, molecular biology, biotechnology-based disease management and the conservation of plant genetic resources. They aim to support the production of improved crop varieties that are more resilient to pests, diseases and environmental stresses, while contributing to sustainable agricultural and forestry development. The policy also establishes a framework for strengthening biotechnology research capacity, promoting cooperation among government institutions, universities and the private sector, and developing the legal and regulatory arrangements necessary for biosafety, intellectual property protection and biodiversity conservation. It emphasises human resource development, public awareness, research funding, infrastructure improvement and compliance with international instruments relating to biosafety and genetic resources, with the overall goal of fostering innovation while ensuring environmental protection and the sustainable use of biological resources.
