A Swedish Strategy for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.

This strategy establishes Sweden’s updated national framework for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and ecosystem services, aligning domestic action with the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, European Union legislation, and obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity. It addresses biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution as interconnected challenges requiring integrated responses across sectors and levels of governance. The strategy promotes the expansion and strengthening of terrestrial, freshwater and marine protected areas, including contributions to the global target of conserving at least 30 percent of land and sea areas, while also advancing ecosystem restoration through measures such as wetland and peatland rehabilitation and implementation of EU nature restoration requirements. It provides for the conservation of forest biodiversity, prevention and control of invasive alien species, and the integration of biodiversity considerations into agriculture, fisheries and forestry management. The strategy further supports ecological compensation mechanisms, private-sector participation, nature-credit initiatives, and the recognition of traditional and Indigenous knowledge, including Sami árbediehtu. Implementation is entrusted to relevant national authorities through coordinated planning, financing, monitoring, reporting and legislative measures, with additional emphasis on public participation, improved environmental data systems, compliance mechanisms, and the mobilization of national and international funding for biodiversity conservation.
