Protected Area Strategy and Action Plan (PASAP) 2025–2035.

This Protected Area Strategy and Action Plan provides a comprehensive blueprint for strengthening The Gambia’s national system of protected and conserved areas, aligning national actions with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA), the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2025–2035 and the National Development Plan and climate change policies. The vision of the Strategy is a resilient and well-connected national system of protected and conserved areas that safeguards The Gambia’s biodiversity, supports climate resilience, enhances livelihoods, and contributes to sustainable national development. The Strategy describes the following strategic goals: 1) expanding and enhancing the ecological representativeness of protected and conserved areas (land, freshwater, coastal and marine); 2) ensuring effective, inclusive, and equitable governance of all protected areas; 3) strengthening the management effectiveness of all protected areas; 4) securing long-term, diversified, and sustainable financing; 5) integrating biodiversity and protected areas considerations into national policies and sectoral planning (land use, agriculture, fisheries, infrastructure); 6) enhancing climate resilience of ecosystems and communities through nature-based solutions; 7) establishing national systems for monitoring, research, reporting, and adaptive management.
