The Singapore Food Agency (Assignment of Function) Notification 2023, made under the Singapore Food Agency Act 2019, assigns an additional function to the Singapore Food Agency concerning the maintenance of food stocks for national food security. Its principal objective is to support the Government’s capacity to maintain and manage a minimum quantity of fit stocks of certain foods in Singapore, thereby contributing to food security. For this purpose, the Notification authorises the Singapore Food Agency, acting as an agent of the Government, to undertake two specific functions: the procurement and holding of fit stocks of the relevant foods, and the distribution and disposal of those food stocks. The measure therefore establishes a legal basis for the Agency’s involvement in maintaining strategic food stocks, with the specific purpose of strengthening the Government’s ability to safeguard food security in Singapore.
