Biodiversity Strategy Austria 2020+.

This Biodiversity Strategy 2020 aims at conserving Austria’s biological diversity, at keeping in check the loss and degradation of species, genetic diversity and habitats as well as addressing and minimising the causes of hazards. Our goal is to make Austria a country worth living in, with pure air, clean water, a diverse nature, as well as safe and affordable food of high quality. The Policy is divided into 5 Field of Actions. The First Field of Action deals with knowing and acknowledging biodiversity. Target 1 argues that the significance of biodiversity is acknowledged by society and that more partners from a variety of sectors and a higher share of the general public support the conservation and development of biological diversity. Moreover, it is stressed that an increased participation of the involved public in biodiversity-related projects has been achieved. Target 2 suggests that biodiversity research and monitoring activities are extended and that knowledge of biology and the ecology of species and habitats as well as of taxonomy has increased; Knowledge of the interrelations between human activities and biodiversity has improved; Data on status and trends of species, their genetic diversity and habitats, as well as influencing factors and conservation measures, are available; Insights and data are taken into account in political decisions. The Second Field of Action concerns sustainable use of biodiversity. Target 3 draws attention to the fact that agriculture and forestry support conservation and improvement of biodiversity listing the following factors: Increase of areas with biodiversity-related agri-environmental measures; The conservation status of the habitats and species that depend on or are affected by agricultural and forest management is measurably Improved on the basis of the 2010 reference scenario; Improvement of the Farmland Bird Index development (2020); Total amount of rare livestock breeds is stable to slightly rising; the number of bee colonies has increased to 400,000. The amount of dead wood and old growth, particularly in the previously low-appointed natural areas of the Alpenvorland, Mühlviertel and Waldviertel and in the eastern parts with warm summers, has increased. Traditional knowledge is preserved. Target 4 stresses that game and fish stocks are adapted to natural environment conditions and stresses that: The Forestry-Hunting Dialogue continues; Population size and structure of hoofed game are optimally adapted to the respective natural habitat conditions; Game impact situation has improved; Public acceptance of predatory animals has improved ; Conservation status of Habitat Directive fish species and aquatic habitat types has improved by 50% or 100%, respectively; threat status of at least 15% of fish species has improved; Good condition and/or good ecological potential as defined in the Water Framework Directive has been achieved by 2015 or 2021/2027, respectively. The fishing industry is sustainable.Target 5 establishes that tourism and leisure activities are in line with biodiversity objectives and emphasizes that biodiversity objectives are incorporated into tourism policies and guidelines and that cooperation projects between tourism and nature conservation are enhanced . Field of Action 3 lays down provisions relating to reducing pressures on biodiversity. This Field is divided in 4 targets as follows: Target 6: Energy supply is biodiversity-friendly; Target 7: Pollution is reduced; Target 8: Negative impacts of invasive alien species are reduced; Target 9: Incentives with negative impact on biodiversity, including subsidies, are abolished or adapted.Field of Action 4 pertains to conserving and developing biodiversity and comprises 2 Targets: Target 10: Species and habitats are conserved; Target 11: Biodiversity and ecosystem services are taken into account in spatial planning and transport/mobility.Field of Action 5 gives emphasis to securing global biodiversity and postulates that contribution to overcome the global biodiversity crisis has been made.
