National Invasive Alien Species Strategy 2008-2017.

The National Invasive Alien Species Strategy is a national policy with a cross-sectoral approach. The timeframe of the policy is 10 years between 2008 and 2017. The overall purpose of this Strategy is to minimize or eliminate the threat of invasive alien species on the economy, environment and society of the Republic of Mauritius. This Strategy lays down prevention measures to minimize the number of unintended and intended invasive alien species introductions to the Republic of Mauritius. The legal, policy and institutional frameworks will be developed for effective management and prevention. Institutional capacity building will be enhanced to implement all aspects of invasive alien species management in the country. Information management and research will be strengthened to have a clear understanding of the economic, environmental and social impacts of invasive alien species that have become established in the Republic of Mauritius; to have ready access to critical information that will support invasive alien species management programmes; and to provide a strong scientific basis for decision-making and resource allocation. Sufficient human, technical and financial resources will be provided for sustainable implementation of invasive alien species management and prevention. The awareness of general public, decision-makers, scientists and other stakeholders will be raised on invasive alien species risks and the benefits of their prevention and management for the economy, environment and society. Early detection and rapid response mechanisms will be developed to minimize harmful consequences of invasive alien species after their introduction. To this end, border control and quarantine measures will be strengthened. An agreed framework will be developed for eradication priorities in place, eradications will be undertaken as necessary and the results will be disseminated. International cooperation will be strengthened through access to information, technical support and other resources to effectively meet its national and international obligations. Control and management will be strengthened to contain the distribution and abundance of invasive alien species to a long-term acceptable level. In order to achieve long-term ecosystem goals, ecosystem restoration will be undertaken for biodiversity conservation purposes and the enhancement of ecosystem services, such as soil conservation and adequate provision of water.
