Bold Goals for U.S. Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing.

These Bold Goals for U.S. Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing are intended to provide a broad vision for the U.S. bioeconomy and what can be achieved with concerted action from industry, academia, nonprofit organisations, the Federal Government, and other organisations. These Bold Goals set ambitious national targets for the next two decades to help establish Research and Development priorities that will be critical to improve the U.S. bioeconomy, with specific sections for public-private collaboration, investments and recommendations for enhancing biosafety and biosecurity. The Bold Goals for U.S. Bioeconomy include: biotechnology and biomanufacturing solutions to climate change issues; food and agriculture innovation; supply chain resilience; human health improvement; cross-cutting advances. Governmental departments and agencies will outline recommendations and steps that are underway to advance the following aspects: data management for bioeconomy; domestic biomanufacturing infrastructure; workforce development; improving the clarity and efficiency of the regulatory process for biotechnology products; creating a Biosafety and Biosecurity Innovation Initiative; pursuing international cooperation. Concerning climate change and energy solutions, there are ten goals grouped under four main themes, where biotechnology play a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions: 1) developing more carbon-neutral transportation and stationary fuels, by producing more sustainable and strategic fuels; 2) producing chemicals and materials from renewable biomass; 3) developing climate-focused agricultural systems based on circular economy; 4) carbon dioxide removal. Concerning food and agriculture innovation, there are three main themes: 1) improving sustainability and resource conservation, while increasing agricultural productivity; 2) improving food nutrition, quality and consumer choice, through reduction of food loss and waste, enhancing nutrient density in foods, and reducing foodborne illness. 3) protecting plants and animals against environment stressors, like drought and floods, and pest and diseases. Concerning supply chain resilience, there are three themes to provide a broad vision to build supply chain resilience for the U.S. bioeconomy: 1) alternative supply chain pathways via biotechnologies and biomanufacturing to promote economic security for critical drugs and chemical production; 2) biomanufacturing innovation to enhance supply chain resilience; 3) standards and data infrastructure to support biotechnology and biomanufacturing trade. Concerning the advancement of human health, there are five themes: 1) accessible health monitoring; 2) precision multi-omic medicine; 3) increasing therapeutic efficacy of cell-based therapies; 4) increasing the speed and diversity of AI-driven therapeutic manufacturing; 5) advanced techniques in gene editing. The report also concerns six cross-cutting research and development themes: 1) discover and understand the diversity of life; 2) enhancing predictive modelling and engineering design of biological systems; 3) measuring performance and quality of biological systems; 4) controlling the performance and quality of biological systems; 5) innovative biomanufacturing approaches; 6) enabling ethical, safe and equitable co-generation of biotechnology products.
