Regulation on methods of testing safflower varieties (Carthamus tinctorius L.) for the purpose of variety recognition.

This Regulation prescribes the methods of testing the safflower variety – Carthamus tinctorius L. in the experimental field and in the laboratory, for the purpose of recognition. The methods shall be used to test certain essential characteristics of the variety, in order to determine: 1) the production and use value of the variety (VCU test); 2) the variety's distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS test). The production and use value of the variety shall be determined on the basis of the results of testing certain essential characteristics of the variety, which relate to: 1) raw grain yield; 2) grain moisture content at the time of harvest; 3) grain yield with 9% moisture; 4) tolerance, i.e. resistance to diseases and pests; 5) oil content in the dry matter of the grain in percentage; 6) protein content in dry matter of grain in percentage; 7) fatty acid composition in oil from a seed sample; 8) oil yield. A variety has better production and utility value if, during testing of certain essential characteristics shows better results compared to characteristics of a standard variety.
