Tree Management Policy 2021.

The Tree Management Policy (2021) outlines a strategic framework for managing urban trees and treescapes within Canberra’s Central National Area. The Policy acknowledges the cultural significance of the land to the Ngunnawal People and emphasises the role of trees in shaping Canberra’s identity as a Garden City and bush capital. It applies to National Capital Authority managed land, excluding conservation areas, diplomatic zones, and trees managed by other entities. Key objectives include building resilient landscapes, protecting existing treescapes, planning future plantings, and embedding best practices in urban tree management. Targets include increasing canopy cover, improving age diversity and ensuring no single species exceeds 10% of the population. The policy is structured around six key areas: Resilience and Vulnerability – Strategies include climate-adapted species, annual planting programs, and pest management. Design and Planning – Emphasises proactive planting, landscape guidelines, and tree replacement protocols. Community Engagement – Promotes transparency, citizen science, and consultation with stakeholders, including Traditional Owners. Maintenance and Monitoring – Focuses on data-driven decision-making, species performance reviews, and soil improvement. Heritage – Ensures tree management aligns with heritage values and legal obligations under the EPBC Act and Burra Charter. Governance – Commits resources, training, and inter-agency collaboration to support policy implementation. The policy concludes with a set of next steps, including the development of an implementation plan, review of the National Capital Plan, and programs for community involvement, veteran tree care, and inter-agency cooperation.
