Interdisciplinary Practical Guidelines on Antimicrobial Stewardship Programming in Liberia (2022-2027).

These Guidelines provide practical support to implement the objective 4 of Liberia's National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance on the optimisation of the use of antimicrobial medicines, and a stepwise approach on how to set up an antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP), including the structures and resources that should be put in place at the national and healthcare facility levels, with feedback on antibiotic use over time. The Guidelines' objectives are: optimising the use of antibiotics; promoting behavioural changes in antibiotic prescribing and dispensing practices; improving quality of care and patient outcomes; reducing further emergence, selection and spread of Antimicrobial Resistance; prolonging the lifespan of existing antibiotics; limiting the adverse economic impact of Antimicrobial Resistance; improving best-practices and capacity of healthcare professionals regarding the rational or judicious use of antibiotics. These Guidelines are structured as follows: structures for the National Antimicrobial stewardship programme in Liberia; structures for healthcare facility antimicrobial stewardship programmes; planning an antimicrobial stewardship programme in a healthcare facility and data on the use of antibiotics in healthcare facility settings; performing antimicrobial stewardship interventions; education and training.
