Law No. 7/2022 approving the Labour Code.

This Law approves the new Labour Code of Guinea-Bissau, replacing the former General Labour Law of 1986 and modernising the legal framework governing employment relationships in the country. Its principal objective is to establish a balanced system of labour regulation that protects workers’ rights while promoting economic development and business activity. The Code sets out the fundamental principles governing individual and collective labour relations, including equality and non-discrimination, freedom of work, employment protection, occupational health and safety, vocational training, remuneration, social dialogue, and trade union freedoms. It also regulates the formation, execution, suspension and termination of employment contracts, aiming to ensure legal certainty, fairness and stability in labour relations. The Code further seeks to strengthen labour standards by establishing comprehensive rules on working time, wages, leave entitlements, collective bargaining, occupational accidents, dismissal procedures, dispute resolution mechanisms, and social protection. It contains specific provisions concerning child labour, women workers, young workers, foreign workers, domestic workers, teleworkers, maritime workers and port workers, thereby adapting labour regulation to different forms of employment.
