Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) 2026-2035.

This Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) for the period 2026–2035 constitutes a national climate-policy and implementation framework that sets out The Gambia's international commitments, domestic policy priorities, institutional responsibilities, financing needs, monitoring mechanisms and implementation actions for mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, and just transition towards climate change and its impacts. Therefore, this Contribution identifies four strategic objectives: 1) reducing greenhouse-gas emissions while supporting economic development; 2) reducing vulnerability and strengthening resilience of communities, ecosystems and infrastructure; 3) building systems for addressing climate impacts that cannot be prevented by mitigation or adaptation; 4) ensuring that climate action produces equitable social and economic outcomes and that vulnerable groups are not disadvantaged by climate-related policies. This NDC serves five overarching legal and policy functions: 1) ensuring compliance with article 4 of the Paris Agreement through communication of a new national climate commitment; 2) translation of The Gambia's Long-Term Climate-Neutral Development Strategy 2050 into measurable actions through 2035; 3) integration of climate policy into national development planning; 4) establishment of a national implementation framework and accountability system; 5) identification of domestic and international support requirements for implementation. The Contribution describes mitigation goals, conditional and unconditional targets and specifies mitigation and adaptation actions. Mitigation measures cover the following key sectors: energy, transport, agriculture, forestry, land use, waste management and industrial processes, and focus on the following: renewable energy expansion; industrial energy efficiency; improvement of electric cooking technologies; increasing transport decarbonisation. Adaptation measures focus on the following matters: protection of coastal populations, infrastructure and freshwater resources, through integrated coastal zone management, coastal hazard mapping, shoreline monitoring, salinity monitoring, wetland and mangrove restoration, resilient water, sanitation and health systems, water harvesting and storage systems; promotion of climate-smart agricultural practices in order to maintain food production despite climate impacts, through: agroecological farming, drought-resilient seeds, improvement of irrigation systems, improving livestock management, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, improvement of post-harvest infrastructure; protection of public health from climate-sensitive disease and climate hazards; strengthening ecosystem resilience and biodiversity, through: mangrove, forest and wetland restoration, biodiversity conservation and nature based approach; strengthening early warning system and disaster-risk financing; promotion of local employment and participation in renewable-energy value chains; empowerment of youth and involvement of communities in environmental projects.
